What to Look for When Choosing a Managed Security Provider

Not all managed security services are created equal. Here are the five questions every business owner should ask before signing a contract.

Managed security services have become one of the most practical options for small and mid-sized businesses that need ongoing security coverage without the cost or overhead of an in-house team. But the market is crowded, and not all providers deliver the same level of service.

Before you sign anything, here are the five questions that will tell you the most about whether a provider is the right fit.

1. What does your monitoring actually cover?

Some managed security providers monitor your network. Others monitor your endpoints. Others focus on specific tools or platforms. Before assuming you are fully covered, ask exactly what is and is not in scope. A monitoring service that does not cover your email environment, for example, leaves a significant gap.

2. What happens when something is detected?

Monitoring is only valuable if it leads to a response. Ask the provider to walk you through exactly what happens when their system detects a threat. Who gets notified? How quickly? What actions does the provider take on your behalf, versus what falls back to you? A clear incident response process is a sign of a mature operation.

3. Will you actually understand the reporting?

Many security providers send monthly reports that are technically accurate but practically unreadable for a non-technical business owner. Ask to see a sample report. Can you tell from it what happened, what was done about it, and what your current risk level is? If the answer is no, that is a problem.

4. What is the contract structure?

Be cautious of providers that lock you into long-term contracts before you have had a chance to evaluate the service. A reputable provider should be confident enough in their work to offer shorter initial commitments with the option to extend. Understand exactly what you are paying for and what the exit terms are.

5. Do they understand your industry?

Security requirements vary significantly by industry. A healthcare clinic has different obligations than a retail operation. If you are in a regulated industry, your provider should understand those requirements and be able to speak to how their service supports them — not just offer a generic security package.

The right managed security provider does not just protect your systems. They become a consistent resource for understanding your risk and making informed decisions about your technology.

Let’s talk about what this means for your business.
